A tusker was killed after it was hit by a goods train in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district at the early hours of Sunday between Madarihat and Dalgaon railway stations.
The carcass of the tusker was removed off the tracks during the day and buried in the nearby forest. Senior forest officials said that the accident occurred at a place which falls under the elephant corridor.
Curbs on speedIn the elephant corridor, there is a restriction imposed over the speed of trains.
Earlier in May this year, an elephant was killed on the tracks in the Dooars region after being hit by train between Madarihat and Hashimara of the same district.
Since 2004, nearly 45 elephants have been killed on the tracks in north Bengal after being hit by the trains.
Though the Railways and the State Forest Department authorities have held a number of meetings to prevent such incidents, the deaths of elephants continued on the tracks.
