Tripura MLA booked on allegations of raping a tribal girl

The Tripura police launch an investigation into the alleged rape charge against Dhananjoy Tripura

Police have launched a probe, into the allegation of rape, against Dhananjoy Tripura (29), Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) MLA. He has been charged with the allegations of raping a tribal girl, deceiving her with the promise of marriage.

Mr. Tripura was the elected nominee of IPFT, coalition partner of BJP, from Raima Valley tribal reserved constituency in Dhalai district in Assembly elections last year.

The tribal girl registered the case at Mandwai police station, 20km east of Agartala, on Sunday. In her complaint, the girl informed that they were having an affair for the past couple of years.

“He [Dhananjoy] gave promise of marriage and developed a physical relationship with me. He raped me several times at a residence in Abhaynagar locality in Agartala”, she alleged adding that the MLA recently discarded her.

The girl hails from Mandwai area where she lodged a complaint in the local police station. Police, however, transferred the case registered under Sections 417 and 376 of IPC to East Agartala Women Police Station as ‘place of occurrence’ was within its jurisdiction.

Police arranged for medical examination of the girl and have her statement recorded before a magistrate on Monday. It is learnt that before complaining to the police, she approached IPFT President Narendra Chandra Debbarma, also a senior Minister in State’s coalition government, for redress.

Meanwhile, Dhanajoy Tripura termed allegations as part of a ‘political conspiracy’ to malign him and the Party. He has even threatened to sue complainant with defamation charge.

Senior IPFT leaders refused to comment on the allegations against their MLA. Opposition Congress and CPI(M) demanded his immediate arrest.
