The Tripura government has suspended a senior official from service on charges of forgery of an EPIC and moral turpitude. The action announced on Wednesday preceded a probe constituted at the directive of the Chief Electoral Officer.

Pintu Lal Das, Deputy Collector and Magistrate (DCM) under West Tripura District Administration, is accused of forging an EPIC (Voter Identity Card) of a woman with whom he allegedly developed an illicit relationship.

Sources said the election department is contemplating legal action against the erring officer for committing forgery with EPIC which is a serious criminal offence. Earlier, the official allegedly forged land records of government registry to benefit certain individuals, they added.

Meanwhile, the woman has gone into hiding. The district administration officials are trying to establish contact with her.

Several Tripura government officials earlier faced punitive action on moral character charges. Few years ago the Joint Secretary (Home) Nepal Sen was axed after employees roughed him up for molesting a woman staff at his chamber in the secretariat.
