The Calcutta High Court on Thursday accepted the petition of Central Bureau of Investigation seeking the cancellation of bail granted to Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra.

Mr. Mitra, an accused in the Saradha scam, was granted bail by a lower court on October 31, nearly 11 months after his arrest.

Delivering its order, a division bench of Justices Nishita Mhatre and Tapash Mookherjea directed Mr. Mitra to surrender before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, on receipt on the order.

The move by >Mr. Mitra to resign from his ministerial post late on Wednesday evening also failed to come to his rescue.

Counsel for CBI argued before the court that the order of a lower court granting bail to the accused suffered from illegality and arbitrariness.

He raised questions on the lower court order, pointing out that what was the change in circumstances that led the lower court to allow his  bail when the High Court had rejected his petition.

It was also argued by the CBI that some witnesses were threatened by Mr. Mitra's family members in the case.

>Mr. Mitra was arrested in December 2014 for his alleged involvement in the multi- crore Saradha scam. The CBI has named him in one of the supplementary charge sheets filed in the case.
