Trainee constables at New Police Line in Patna on Friday went on the rampage over the death of a constable who was ill for the past several days and attacked senior officers while vandalising vehicles and furniture. A high-level probe has been ordered into the incident.
Soon after receiving news of the death of constable Sabita Kumari, who was said to be suffering from typhoid and dengue, the trainee constables attacked senior officers with sticks and vandalised the residence of a senior officer claiming he did not grant leave to the indisposed constable.
“We work without food, water and toilet facility for long hours and they (senior officers) do not grant us leave even for genuine reasons,” alleged a protesting trainee constable. The trainees also alleged that Kumari died due to the sheer negligence and inhuman attitude of the senior officers.
Later, two officers of Superintendent of Police rank and a Sergeant Major-cum-Deputy SP also became the target of their ire, besides some media persons and local residents.
Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj, donning riot gear, had to reach the spot while personnel from other police stations and the Bihar Military Police were summoned to finally bring the situation under control.
CM asks for report
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asked Director General of Police K.S. Dwivedi to submit a report on the incident.
“The trainee constables have undergone training for just a few days. They are not yet familiar with police work culture and discipline. The incident seems to be a case of indiscipline. Attempts would be made to reform them but those who had indulged in violent acts will be punished,” Mr. Dwivedi told journalists.
