Toll in Kashmir poll violence rises to nine

The death toll in the violence during the April 9 byelection in Srinagar rose to nine, with a civilian dying of bullet injuries on Tuesday. Muzaffar Ahmad Mir, 23, was hit when security forces opened fire during clashes at Barsoo in Ganderbal in central Kashmir.

Mir was treated at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science Hospital. His death sparked a shutdown in parts of Ganderbal and Kulgam.

There was widespread violence during the polls in Budgam, Srinagar and Ganderbal districts. A total of nine civilians were killed in security forces’ firing in Budgam and Ganderbal districts.

Militants loot bank

Suspected militants struck at a bank in south Kashmir and decamped with cash on Wednesday.
