A rhinoceros was attacked and killed by a tiger in the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR), Ganesh Bhat, DTR deputy director, said in Lakhimpur Kheri on Tuesday.
“A tiger entered into the rhino rehabilitation area (RRA) on Monday night and killed a 34-year-old female rhino, Pavitri,” he said.
The partially eaten carcass of the rhino was recovered early on Tuesday morning when the monitoring teams started combing the rhino area, Mr. Bhatt added.
“A panel of doctors has been formed to carry out post mortem. Frequent attacks on the rhinos by tigers have stressed an urgent need to study the cases, as most of the incidents have taken place during winter seasons,” he said.
This is the third incident of a tiger attack on an adult rhino.
