Three killed in Kashmir avalanche


Two Army men and a civilian porter were killed in an avalanche in the higher reaches of the Shamsabari range in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday.

According to the Army, four soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer, and a porter went missing in the avalanche around 8 a.m. While three of them were killed in the avalanche, the Army managed to rescue two soldiers in the evening. One of the rescued was shifted to a hospital.

“Around 8 a.m., an avalanche triggered in the higher reaches of the Shamshabari range resulted in one Junior Commissioned Officer, three jawans and one civilian porter getting trapped in the frontier district of Kupwara. The JCO, one soldier and the porter suffered fatal casualties in the avalanche,” the Army said in a statement.

The Army said it immediately sent its avalanche rescue teams located at the Nasta Chun Pass to commence a search and rescue operation in the area.
