Weeks after the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) offered a truce, a new “terror” outfit appears to have sprung up in Meghalaya.

Lawei ba Phyrnai, identifying itself as a “terror group” formed by 37 “qualified jobless youth,” emailed a letter to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. The police are probing the mail that threatens a series of bomb attacks on educational institutions every week from May 1.

On the group’s hit list are the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education building and the North Eastern Hill University.

“We will keep planting bombs till you and your government come up with a solution to employ every single Meghalayan out there,” the threat letter said.

The police disclosed the letter soon after State Home Minister Lakhmen Rymbui said talks with the banned HNLC would be unconditional.

The Meghalaya government has hitherto followed the policy of pursuing peace only if the members of an extremist group lay down their arms.

This rider had apparently kept the HNLC away from talks earlier.
