Swachh Delhi app a hit

About 66 per cent of the actionable complaints received through the Swachh Delhi app had been addressed as of Monday evening, when the joint sanitation drive of the Delhi Government and civic bodies came to a close.

The sanitation drive from November 22 to 30 was targeted at clearing the garbage and malba that Delhiites complained about through the app, which was launched on November 16.

The plan was to collect photos, with GPS coordinates, of trash across the city via the app, and then divide the work of cleaning to various government agencies and civic bodies. The government’s Public Works Department was supposed to lift construction waste or malba, while garbage was the civic bodies’ responsibility.

According to the Urban Development Department, which operated the central control room for the app, a total of 43, 717 complaints were received from November 16 till Monday and 43,370 had been assigned to the agency concerned. After evaluation, 6,226 so-called complaints were deemed “junk”. Out of the 37,144 genuine and assigned complaints, about 66 per cent – that is 24,232 – had been “completed”, as per a senior official of the UD Department. The official added that about 8,000 metric tonnes of malba had been lifted by the PWD during the drive.

Another senior official of the UD Department said the sanitation drive had been stopped, but the app would be continued to be used for collecting complaints.

“The complaints after Monday will not be addressed immediately as we will not be forwarding to the agencies. We are going to give them some time to clear the backlog,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the BJP’s Yogender Chandolia, Leader of the House in the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, said the government had not upheld its part of the deal.
