Suspended UP chief engineer in graft case arrested

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday arrested the suspended Uttar Pradesh chief engineer, Yadav Singh, in a multi-crore bribery case. The official has been accused of charging five per cent commission for allotting projects to private contracts.

“Mr.Yadav was called for questioning, during which he had been giving evasive replies. Therefore, he has been arrested for custodial interrogation in the corruption case that was registered in July last year. The accused had signed as many as 1,280 contract bonds amounting to Rs.959 crore within eight days in November 2014,” said a CBI official.

The case pertained to alleged corrupt practices in the tenders for laying underground cables worth Rs.92.02 crore. The contract was awarded allegedly without following the necessary procedures. The Noida police had registered an FIR in the matter in 2014, but later filed a closure report that was accepted by the court.

It has been alleged that the tenders were called and received in the same month. They were opened in November and allotted to two private firms in December 2011. However, it later turned out that the laying work had started about three months previously and by the time the tenders were allotted, almost 60 per cent of the work had been completed.

The CBI investigations revealed that while the two firms executed the work for about Rs.47 crore, another firm was given the rest of the work without any tendering process.

The agency conducted searches on the premises of the accused and his associates at 14 places and identified 38 immovable properties acquired by him in Noida and Agra. The CBI had earlier arrested the project engineer, Noida Authority, in the same case.

The CBI has registered another case of disproportionate assets against Singh, his family members and associates.

Income-Tax Department investigations earlier revealed that between 2008 and 2014, during which Singh held several sensitive posts with the Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway Authorities, contracts valued at Rs.2,551 crore had been awarded.
