The Sports Injury Centre (SIC) at the Safdarjung Hospital will introduce an exclusive OPD for sportspersons from next month.
The announcement was made by SIC Director Dr Deepak Choudhary on the eve of a two-day International conference where 25 live knee and shoulder arthroscopy surgeries will be conducted.
“We don’t refuse cases from the general public but July onwards a dedicated OPD for sportspersons will be introduced. It will be thrice a week,” Choudhary said at a press conference.
Talking about the SIC, Dr. Choudhary said the vision is to provide integrated surgical rehabilitation and diagnostic facility under one roof for sports injuries. He also said the Sports Ministry has recognised SIC as a referral centre for the treatment of athletes preparing for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Dr. Deepak Joshi, an arthroscopy specialist at SIC, said 90 per cent of their cases are related to knee and shoulder injuries while others are ankle and elbow.
“Mostly, wrestlers from the UP and Haryana belt come to us. The recurrent shoulder dislocation is the most common problem among wrestlers,” he said. Dr Choudhary said treatment at the SIC is quite affordable.—PTI
