Six children, aged 10-13, were buried alive when the dilapidated building of their school at Jalilpur village in Uttar Pradesh collapsed on Friday. Seven other children were injured in the incident which occurred when classes were on in Ramanand Public High School, said Inspector-General (Law and Order) B.P. Singh.

They have been admitted to the Bijnor district hospital, said a senior police official here.

There were 24 children in the building. Reports from Bijnor said rescue operations were launched only four hours after the incident. While the school staff fled the scene, the jurisdictional Chandpur police also arrived late, it is alleged.

Irate families of the deceased and the injured staged a demonstration demanding action against the school management.

An inquiry has been ordered by the district administration. No arrests have been made.
