SIT to probe honeytrap racket in Madhya Pradesh

BJP demands CBI inquiry; Congress alleges plot to destabilise government.

The Madhya Pradesh police have constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to look into a string of cases involving an inter-State syndicate involved in allegedly blackmailing bureaucrats and politicians by threatening to make public videos showing them in compromising situations. Six persons have been arrested in the case so far.

The team would look into all the angles of the cases and submit a report, said Director General of the Police V.K. Singh.

Although on Monday it was announced that Inspector General of Police (CID) D. Sreenivas Varma would lead the team, he was replaced by Additional Director General of Police, Counter Intelligence Wing, Sanjeev Shami on Tuesday. Some members of the group have been active for at least a decade, said ADG, Intelligence Wing Kailash Makwana. “And the racket was active mostly in Madhya Pradesh”. Names of those trapped have not been revealed.

The Congress and BJP meanwhile traded charges, with the former saying the investigation was a ploy to destabilise the Kamal Nath government.

“It’s a conspiracy of the BJP, which has been trying to destabilise the government from Day 1,” remarked Law Minister P.C. Sharma.
