Singur erupted in joy as the report of the historic Calcutta High Court verdict upholding the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011 reached the area.
Farmers and their families came out of their houses in large numbers cheering the verdict, smeared ‘gulal’ on each other and distributed sweets.
Celebrations were witnessed at Purbapara in Beraberi village and Ghoshpara at Gopalnagar village adjacent to the erstwhile Nano car project site.
“We feel now that we will get back our land...We are waiting anxiously for it. We will begin tilling as soon as we get our land back,” Godadhar Koley, a farmer told PTI at Beraberi.
“When will we get our land deed?” asked some farmers at Gopalnagar. Some of them from Bajemelia village even rushed to the Hoogly district land acquisition office at Chinsurah, to inquire when they would get back their land.
There was, however, uncertainty among the farmers who had accepted cheques for their land.
“I don’t know what the future holds for us...Will we become daily labourers now?” asked worried Bikas Pakira, who had received training by Tata Motors.
