The Vigilance officials nabbed a Sub-Inspector (S-I) of police posted at Ranbha police station in Ganjam district of Odisha on Saturday while he was accepting bribe for not arresting the six accused in kidnapping of a girl.

The accused, Niranjan Das, was arrested and his residence searched by the vigilance sleuths. According to Superintendent of Police of Berhampur vigilance Manoranjan Panda, the S-I had earlier accepted Rs.1,000 from the complainant on May 1 and further demanded Rs.4,000.

In August 2013, a case had been lodged in Rambha police station in relation to kidnapping of a girl. Seven persons had been named as accused in this case. The S-I had arrested two persons and later contacted the complainant and demanded Rs.5,000 as bribe.

The complainant, Duryodhan Behera, paid Rs.1,000 to the S-I and promised to pay the rest amount on Saturday. He however approached the vigilance department and a trap was laid to nab the S-I red-handed.
