Shiv Sena corporator Sunil Prabhu (42) was elected Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), country's richest municipal corporation on Friday. He won 125 seats, defeating his rival Sunil More of Congress in the 227-member body. The Shiv Sena, the BJP and the Republican Party of India (RPI) alliance won 107 seats in the civic polls, falling seven short of the golden figure of 114.

On Friday, Arun Gawli-led Akhil Bharatiya Sena's two members supported Mr. Prabhu's candidature. So did 16 independents. Two of them had broken away from the BJP after they failed to secure ticket.

During the election, nine corporators of the Samajwadi Party chose to stay neutral, while 28 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena corporators were absent. Of the 227, 190 were present during the polls.
