‘Seize arms irrespective of political colour'

“The police have been told not to consider party colour”

May 26, 2011 02:45 am | Updated 02:55 am IST - KOLKATA:

The drive to seize illegal arms across West Bengal will continue and the police administration has been directed to take necessary action irrespective of the party affiliation of those responsible for stockpiling of such weapons, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Wednesday.

“Possession of illegal arms is an illegal act. The police have been told not to consider party colour will making the seizures,” she asserted after a meeting of the State Cabinet.

Ms. Banerjee had said earlier this week that if local people or political workers got wind of the existence of illegal weapons they ought to inform the police “without taking the law into their hands”.

The government will be seeking legal opinion on the re-opening of the cases relating to the killings at Sainbari in Bardhaman district and at Cossipore in the 1970s, she added. “The law will take its own course,” the Chief Minister said.

The State Government has also asked for a detailed report from the Law and Judicial Department about the judicial commissions ordered by the previous Left Front government.
