The Shiromani Akali Dal on Tuesday announced that Bibi Jagir Kaur, former president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, would be its candidate from the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency.

Jagir Kaur was a Cabinet Minister in the Akali Dal-led government in the State. She was acquitted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court last December in a case of forcible abortion and abduction of her daughter Harpreet Kaur, who had died under mysterious circumstances in April 2000. She had to resign as a Minister from the Akali-BJP government in 2012 after a CBI court sentenced her and three others to five years’ imprisonment.

Addressing a rally in Tarn Taran, SAD president Sukhbir Badal said Bibi Jagir Kaur would be the voice of the people as well as the Sikh Panth in Parliament.

Failed promises

Mr. Badal accused the Congress government led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh of failing to keep its promises made during the 2017 Assembly polls. “Never before had any political leader sworn on ‘Gutka Sahib’ at a public rally and then gone back on his words as Capt. Amarinder had on the issue of complete farm loan waiver as well as employment,” he alleged.

“The Congress government has closed down all social welfare schemes,” Mr. Badal said, adding that the government had not paid ₹100 crore to brides from underprivileged sections of society. He said the government had also not paid old age pension to the tune of ₹1,140 crore.
