The Centre on Monday informed the Supreme Court that the parents of a youth — who was killed in a road rage in 2011 in Manipur involving the son of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh — will be provided security by the State government.

The Manipur government assured the court that the parents of victim Irom Roger would be provided round-the-clock security by Manipur Rifles.

Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh told a Bench of Justice Deepak Gupta that orders had already been issued to provide security to Irom Chitra Devi and Irom Lokendra Singh.

Advocate Utsav Singh Bains appeared for the parents of the victim. In an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, Manipur Chief Secretary O Nabakishore Singh denied the allegation that at the instance of the Chief Minister, the administration, including police, was obstructing the Iroms from approaching the High Court to challenge the conviction of Ajay Meetai for lesser offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. On May 29, the Supreme Court asked the Centre to consider giving security cover to the parents of the youth. Manipur told the court that it did not have any problem in providing security to them.
