Rituparno Ghosh’s films, belongings to be archived

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accepted here on Tuesday a proposal to set up an archive of the films and some personal belongings of noted filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh who died in the city on May 30.

Reputed actor and film director Aparna Sen made the proposal at a memorial service for Mr. Ghosh, which was attended by Ms. Banerjee.

She said his films and belongings cold be archived to make them accessible to the public, including students researching his works.

Besides Ms. Sen, many eminent film personalities including Soumitra Chatterjee and Madhabi Mukherjee were present at the venue.

“Ritu learnt the lessons of film direction from life itself… He had the courage to be himself and he held it up to the world,” recalled Ms. Sen.

“Hard to accept”

Speaking of his untimely death, veteran actor Mr. Chatterjee said: “At my age every other day I have to hear the news of someone’s death. I realise that people from my generation are leaving their space in this world. But Rituparno’s departure is very hard to accept.”
