With Dussehra round the corner and the tradition of enacting the Ramleela for 10 successive nights to start soon, a group of east Delhi residents have moved the National Green Tribunal (NGT) highlighting the threat to the environment in their area due to the performance in a park there.
The petitioners, on Thursday, moved the green tribunal against the use of a park that was maintained by them for the Ramleela performance.
A bench headed by Justice U. D. Salvi has now issued a notice to the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and the Adarsh Ramleela Committee.
The plea, which has been filed by the Janta Welfare Association based in Pandav Nagar area, opposes the Ramleela performance that is set to begin in the park from October 12.
The park is otherwise used for morning walks and recreational purposes.
“The park is the property of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC). There are more than 500 plants and trees that are planted by the residents of D-block. For conducting Ramleela, the committee has started setting its tent, destroying nature,” the plea said.
The association has claimed that the residents have lodged a complaint with the police and the EDMC, but no action had been taken.
The association has now sought directions to the EDMC to not allot the park to the Ramleela committee. According to then, it would cause damage to the environment and destroy natural vegetation.
