The BJP-IPFT coalition government in Tripura has proposed renaming of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). It has also proposed changes in the administrative structure of the council founded under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Radha Charan Debbarma, TTAADC Chief Executive Member, said the State government had sent a suggestion to rename the council as Tipraland Autonomous Territorial Council (TATC). Other important proposals included one third reservation for women in the 28-member council.

He said they had agreed to the proposals and requested the State government to work for the empowerment of the council as per 74th amendment to the Constitution.

Renaming of the TTAADC was a long-standing demand of many tribal groups. The BJP’s coalition partner IPFT was in favour of putting the word ‘Tipraland’ as it was striving for a separate tribal State by that name.

The proposals of the State government, which got the support of the present TTAADC authority, were sent to the Union government for implementation. The ruling BJP in its Assembly election pledge had assured augmentation of the powers of the council and other reforms.

The TTAADC has limited jurisdiction over three-fourth land of the State which covers one-third population.
