In a letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat has expressed disappointment over Mr. Modi’s mention of an additional route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra at the recent BRICS summit.

Addressing the media here on Friday, Mr. Rawat said economy should not be the sole reason for the Centre to propose an additional route for the Yatra which had historical, cultural, religious, and traditional importance.

“I want to request Mr. Modi to refrain from pressing upon the need for an additional route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The Yatra has the Om Parvat on its current route…. This route is incomparable and one must not just look at it from a commercial perspective,” Mr. Rawat said.

The letter states: “Additional/alternative routes to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra would be against the Hindu scriptures.”
