The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the police to give adequate protection to a woman whose husband was killed allegedly in an incident of custodial violence when he tried to intervene in an argument between some policemen and a couple at Nand Nagri in north-east Delhi on September 7.
Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for Rabia, told the Bench of Justice Siddharth Mridul that an investigation conducted by the District Magistrate of Shahdara had found that 34-year-old Shahnawaz Chaudhary had died in an incident of custodial violence.
The Court was informed that Ms. Rabia was called to Nand Nagri police station and illegally detained there overnight on two occasions.
Delhi Commission for Women counsel Prabhsahay Kaur said the DCW had supported Ms. Rabia's case and sought directions for ensuring her protection. She said the accused policemen, who had not yet been suspended, had gone to Ms. Rabia's home and demanded to know if she had lodged a complaint against them.
The Court issued notices to the Delhi government, Delhi police and Station House Officer of Nand Nagri police station, asking them to file their replies before the next date of hearing on October 20.
