The Bharatiya Janata Party in Punjab on Friday alleged that the recent clash in Phagwara and the violent incidents that followed it were part of a larger political conspiracy to incite sectarian violence ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
“We have urged Punjab Governor V.P. Singh Badnore to order a special investigation team to probe the matter,” said State BJP president Shwait Malik.
The party has submitted a memorandum to Mr. Badnore, requesting him to issue a directive to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to call an all-party meeting to deliberate "joint initiatives" for establishing peace and harmony among all sections of society.
Anti-Cong. campaign
Mr. Malik attacked the Congress government for "failing to deliver on its pre-poll promises" and said that development in the State has come to a standstill.
“Since the Congress formed the government in Punjab it has only been giving excuses and not performing. It promised the moon to the people of Punjab and now it is not able to keep its words,” said Mr. Malik.
He said it is high time the Congress performed or it should quit. “We will launch a ‘Congress, Punjab Chhodo’ programme as part of our 'Save Punjab' campaign in the days to come,” he added.
