PDP expels leader for bid to split party

People Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti expelled senior leader and former Cabinet Minister Syed Altaf Bukhari on Saturday for allegedly “planning to head a breakaway faction.’’

“The party was watching the activities of Mr. Bukhari with concern for quite some time. He attempted to break the party by hobnobbing with its rivals after the end of the PDP-BJP coalition,” said a PDP spokesman.

Mr. Bukhari, a businessman-turned-politician, was considered a close confidant of Ms. Mufti.
