A local court in Kolhapur on Monday sent Sameer Gaikwad, an activist of the right-wing outfit Sanatan Sanstha and prime suspect in the murder of veteran Communist leader Govind Pansare, to judicial custody till October 9.
The Kolhapur police have further demanded permission for Gaikwad’s brain mapping. Earlier in the day, Gaikwad was produced in the court amid high security after his extended police custody came to an end on Monday.
A cohort of 15 pro-Sanatan Sanstha lawyers from different parts of Maharashtra was present to defend Gaikwad, while nearly 20 lawyers were present for the prosecution.
Pansare and his wife were repeatedly shot at by motorcycle-borne assailants outside their home in Kolhapur’s Sagarmal locality.
