At least one person was killed and 50 people were injured when 10 bogies of the Guwahati-Bangalore Express and a passenger train derailed, some after a collision, on Sunday evening near Jamirghata in West Bengal's Malda district.

Railway spokesperson Anil Kumar Saxena said the body of an elderly woman was found near the derailed engine of the Express train.

Two bogies and the engine of the Express train, which was on its way to the southern city, derailed first and were hit by the Azimganj-Malda Town Passenger, leading to further derailment of bogies of both the trains, railway sources said. Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi said a body was found at the site, but was probably not connected with the accident. “There will be a full inquiry into the incident.”

The accident occurred between Jamirghata and Gourhata after 7 p.m., Samir Goswami, Chief PRO of the Eastern Railway, said.

PTI adds:

Helplines have been set up at Howrah (033-26411416), Malda (03512-283444) and Rampurhat (03461-255131) railway stations for the public.
