OIC meet: Geelani’s passport suspended

Separatists are unlikely to attend the Foreign Ministers’ meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) scheduled in the United Nations as the J&K government on Tuesday decided to suspend the passport of separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani.

Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar said, “Geelani received an e-mail [about suspension] today evening. Geelani had almost fulfilled the formalities of a visa to visit New York to attend the OIC meeting.”

Geelani was issued a 90-day passport in the month of July this year to visit his ailing daughter in Saudi Arabia, which too raked controversy.

Sources said the government is unlikely to allow any separatist leader to attend the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in New York, scheduled for September 27, where OIC members’ Foreign Ministers are likely to meet.
