Chairperson of Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Sandhyabati Pradhan said they are planning to propose new guidelines for management of residential schools’ hostels managed by State Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) Development Department.

Speaking to newsmen during her visit to MKCG Medical College and Hospital to meet and interact with the class VIII girl from Daringbadi area of Kandhamal district, who had given birth to a child at her school hostel on January 13 morning, Ms. Pradhan said SC and ST Department has been directed to ensure safety and security of students at all hostels managed by it. “To enhance security of children staying at these hostels, new guidelines are being formulated,” she added.

“Police verification of all staff at these hostels has to be made, and any person with suspicious records should be removed. Our commission has directed the administration to initiate action against erring personnel of these schools,” she said.

According to Ms. Pradhan, all treatment expenses of the victim now admitted in MKCG Medical College and Hospital are being borne by the State government. Interim financial assistance is being arranged for the victim for her proper rehabilitation. The newborn of the victim has died. The youth behind her impregnation has been taken into police custody.

Four staff members of the concerned residential school at Daringbadi have been suspended and its five contractual employees have been disengaged. The suspended staff include the headmaster and three teachers of the school, who served as assistant superintendents of its hostel. Five disengaged contractual employees were one Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM), two cook-cum-attendants, two matrons and one lady worker-cum-watcher of the school.
