The Odisha government on Tuesday accepted Delhi-based defence analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra’s plea and decided to take steps to withdraw the cases pending against him by following laid-down procedures.

“Taking into account his representation, the government have decided not to accord sanction of prosecution in cases where prosecution has been sought for and also decided to withdraw other cases pending against him by following laid-down procedures,” according to a press release issued by the State government’s Home Department.

Mr. Iyer-Mitra had made an appeal to the Odisha government to consider withholding sanction to prosecute him in the cases pending against him at the Sahid Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar and at Konark police station in Puri district.

The defence analyst, in separate letters to the Chief Secretary and the Chief Minister, had appealed to accept his apology and contrition in having wounded the sentiments of people of Odisha without intention.

In his letter, Mr. Iyer-Mitra had further mentioned that in consideration of his unconditional apology in having hurt the sentiments of people of Odisha unintentionally “without malice or intent” the Odisha Assembly had pardoned him on November 16.
