October 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:23 am IST - BHUBANESWAR:

Barapitha, a tribal hamlet in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, has become the first village in the state having solar lights in every house, said National Aluminium Company (NALCO), on Friday.

NALCO Chairman and Managing Director T.K Chand inaugurated the solar project at the village in presence of Joydeep Nayak, Inspector General of Police (SC and ST Protection Cell) and Khurda district collector Niranjan Sahu.

“While today green energy has become a buzz word, the vision behind such an innovative initiative was to enhance the usage of non-conventional energy sources in households,” Mr Chand said.

According to Mr. Nayak , under the project, each household is having two solar home lighting systems with the facility to charge mobile phones and other devices. Besides, the village roads and school will have solar lighting and the village community centre has been provided with an LED TV, which runs on solar power.
