Odisha Finance Minister presents interim budget

The supplementary budget proposals of Rs. 9,421.25 crore for the current financial year 2013-14 was presented by Finance Minister Prasanna Acharya in the State Assembly on Friday afternoon.

Mr. Acharya presented the budget proposals amid uproar by the opposition legislators who stalled the proceedings during the day when the ruling Biju Janata Dal legislators too countered the opposition by displaying placards.

While the gross amount of the supplementary budget had been fixed at Rs. 9,421.25 crores, the net budget provision amounted to Rs. 7,144.58 crore.

The major chunk of the budget was to be spent for relief, restoration and repair work in rehabilitation in cyclone and flood affected areas.

The government had decided to spend Rs. 2,074.36 crore for the purpose with anticipated release of Rs. 1,800 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) and Rs. 234.36 crore from State Disaster Response Fund.

The other purposes for which provisions were made in the budget include supply of laptops to Plus II pass out and meritorious students Rs. 30 crore, assistance to the cyclone and flood affected students for school uniform and text books Rs. 30 crore; horticulture mission Rs. 15 crore; and self-defence training to girl students Rs. 6.25 crore.
