Trinamool Congress and BJP workers got into a scuffle in Malda district of West Bengal as both sides took out rallies on the issue of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
Trinamool leaders said the party was opposing the plan for an NRC update in West Bengal and observing a “black day” in protest against the detention of its MPs and MLAs at the Silchar airport earlier in the week. The BJP said they took out the rally to demand the NRC in Bengal. The two parties crossed paths in Malda town.
“The situation was quickly brought under control,” Arnab Ghosh, Superintendent of Police, Malda, told The Hindu .
CPI(M) State secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said the two parties were pretending to criticise each other for narrow political interests.
