Suspected non-tribal insurgents ambushed an Assam Rifles column on Tuesday afternoon near Sita village in the border district of Chandel. While confirming the incident, Assam Rifles sources however could not give full details saying that these were being collected.

However, quoting local sources, intelligence agencies said that at least 2 personnel were feared dead and 2 others wounded. Underground organisation sources also claimed that there were some casualties.

Reports said that the Assam Rifles column was travelling in jeeps near Sita village at 1 pm on Tuesday when three powerful bombs were exploded along the mountain roads almost simultaneously. Some of the vehicles were dented and it is believed some personnel sustained sharpnel wounds.

The lurking insurgents also opened fire from automatic rifles from several directions. There were also retaliations from the Assam Rifles personnel. The fierce exchange of fire continued till late in the evening. However, as reinforcements were rushing towards the spot, the insurgents escaped through the mountains.

Police and security forces rushed to the spot and combed the nearby mountains. However, no arrest could be made since it is feared that the attackers had fled to their camps located at the no man’s land. So far, no underground organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack.
