No SEZ status for Infosys in West Bengal, says Mamata

“Cannot make exception for Infosys when policy decision is against SEZs”

Reiterating her opposition to the setting up of special economic zones (SEZ) in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Monday that she could not make an exception for Infosys which had been seeking SEZ status for a proposed project in the State.

“If I have made a policy decision that there will be no SEZ, how can we give SEZ status to Infosys?” Ms. Banerjee said.

Stating that she “cannot discriminate” between organisations on a policy decision, she expressed her keenness about Infosys setting up a facility in West Bengal.

“When I have said that I will not give SEZ status, I will not give SEZ status,” Ms. Banerjee asserted.

Uncertainty prevails over the future of the Infosys project at Rajarhat in the north-east fringes of the city as the government and company officials have failed to resolve the deadlock over granting SEZ status to the company.

On February 29, a senior official of the company, after meeting Industry Minister Partha Chaterjee, said the “model has to be financially viable” for the company to set up operations in the State.

Land ceiling

Emphasising that there could be no climb down on her government's policy on land ceiling as well as its stand on SEZs, Ms. Banerjee said all steps would be taken to protect the interest of farmers.
