Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh and his son Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister-designate Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said there was no move, at present, to form a non-Congress, non-BJP Third Front.

While Mr. Mulayam Singh said he had not been approached by any party, Mr. Akhilesh Yadav denied his party was in touch with the Left parties and others to establish a Third Front adding that any decision in that direction would be taken by the party president.

To a question, Mr. Akhilesh Yadav said the extension of invitation to Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to attend his oath-taking ceremony on March 15 in U.P., was as per “established norms.”

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Mulayam Singh said the new Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh would not do anything “negative” or with a feeling of vengeance.

About the Rs. 66,000-crore burden that will fall on the State government to fulfil the party's election promises, he said, “The State's budget is over Rs. 1 lakh crore. There should be no problem.”
