Trilokpuri in East Delhi remained tense for the fourth day on Sunday , however there was no fresh incidents of violence. Section 144 continues to be in force in the area.

With heavy police presence and surveillance , residents preferred to stay indoors. The area wore a deserted look, as if under curfew, with all shops shut and only policemen visible on the main streets.

The Delhi police had on Saturday assured that the forces have been doing their best to maintain peace in the area. Policemen from various police stations have been deployed along with personnel from the Rapid Action Force.

On Sunday, the officers continued to take rounds of the entire Trikokpuri area with special vigil in blocks number 14,15, 20 and 27. According to police, these neighbourhoods witnessed maximum clashes between members of two communities.

Special Commissioner (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra, Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Sanjay Beniwal and Deputy Commissioner of Police East district Ajay Kumra have also been taking regular rounds of the area to maintain peace. Apart from this, the peace committees constituted by the police have also been counselling the people.

So far, 60 have been arrested under charges of rioting and 14 people have been injured in the riots. No fresh arrests were made on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party has alleged that the communal violence in Trilokpuri has been committed in a pre-planned manner to polarise the society on religious lines.

“The Aam Aadmi Party appeals to the people of the area to maintain peace and calm, and no attention should be given to rumours being spread by vested interests to create discord between communities,” a statement issued by the party said. They also demanded that the Delhi Police probe into the role of a former BJP MLA in the entire incident. “Since there are credible reports that he had convened a meeting on Diwali night and trouble started only after that, we demand that his role should be probed,” the statement read.
