Nitish to meet JD(U) leaders ahead of Sampark Yatra

Amid rising speculation about political upheavals in Bihar, former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday called a meeting of party leaders, MLAs, MPs and others at his residence.

The senior Janata Dal (United) leader will also hold separate meetings with party leaders of different districts. Political circles suggest that Mr. Kumar is looking to explore political strategy and take some hard decisions.

Mr. Kumar will embark on a 16-day Sampark Yatra from West Champaran on November 13. He intends to cover 32 districts and address two meetings each day during the ‘contact’ tour.

Party sources have told The Hindu that Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi will not be part of Mr. Kumar’s tour, which takes on significance coming ahead of the Assembly polls in November next year.

However, JD(U) State unit chief Basistha Narayan Singh denied any souring of ties. “On many occasions, the Chief Minister has called Nitish Kumar as his ideal and praised his political initiatives… There is no question of even the slightest of cracks in their ties,” he said.

Asked why Mr. Manjhi was not attending Mr. Kumar’s tour, Mr. Basistha Singh said there was no bar on anyone participating in “a party activity.”

Party insiders told The Hindu that Mr. Kumar would be undertaking the tour “not as a former Chief Minister but as a future Chief Minister.”

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has taken a dig at the apparent JD(U) discord. “Nitish Kumar, fed up with Mr. Manjhi, now himself wants to become Chief Minister and that’s why he has called a meeting of his party leaders at his residence. However in the coalition era he cannot nurse such a dream,” said State BJP leader Nawal Kishore Yadav.
