Nitish joins hands with BJP: Bihar’s political scenario

Nitish Kumar to face floor test in Bihar Assembly

Nitish Kumar and the BJP claim to have the support of 131 legislators

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will face a floor test in the State Assembly today. The day-long special session of the Assembly will begin at 11 a.m.

Nitish Kumar and the BJP claimed to have the support of 131 legislators in the 243-member Assembly. They need 122 votes to win the confidence vote.

All five MLAs belonging to the BJP’s alliance partners – Lok Janshakti Party (2), Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (2) and Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular (1) – are likely to vote in favour of the new government led by Nitish Kumar.

The RJD, party sources said, would demand for “secret voting” on the issue.

The RJD leaders have appealed to JD(U) and other legislators to vote on the “voice of the conscience”. The party has 80 MLAs in the House.

The Congress, which has 27 legislators, has declared to vote against the Nitish Kumar government.

The House has three Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and four Independent MLAs.

Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhury said that the earlier notified monsoon session of the State Assembly scheduled to begin from July 28 to August 3 has been cancelled as it was recommended by the previous government.

Earlier on Wednesday, Nitish Kumar had submitted a letter of support from 131 MLAs to Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, who had given him 48-hours to prove his majority on the floor of the assembly.

The new government, though, decided to seek a trust vote within 24-hours on Friday.
