Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said that with the changing trend in crimes, the police were facing more challenges and there was a need to equip the force with latest technology.

Paying tributes to the policemen who laid down their lives on the line of duty, he said this was all the more true in the case of economic crimes. He expressed confidence that in the days to come people would see modern police force.

Mr Yadav appealed to the policemen to work with honesty, dedication and a sense of public service.

He said that the state government was making all efforts to help the families of the martyred policemen and the ex-gratia had been increased to Rs 20 lakh from Rs 10 lakh.

He said that after the Samajwadi Party came to power, around 34,000 non-gazetted policemen were promoted. -- PTI
