Making a veiled attack on the Odia-speaking ability of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the BJP chief says the next Chief Minister should be an Odia-speaking leader.

BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday accused the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal government of Odisha of not allowing the implementation of Central welfare programmes.

“The Narendra Modi Government has come out with Ayushman Bharat Yojna, which would benefit 50 crore people in the country. Why can't Odias take benefit of the scheme? The State government makes different excuses to deny the scheme to its people,” he told BJP workers near Salipur in Cuttack district.

“If Odisha accepts Ayushman Bharat Yojna, its people can take advantage of free treatment of up to ₹5 lakh in the event of falling ill outside the State,” he said.

“We are envisaging a new Odisha where there should be no unemployment, no hunger, no health problem and no poverty. It can only happen under the leadership of Narendra Modi,” he claimed.

‘More funds but less development’

Under United Progressive Alliance regime, Odisha received ₹79,000 crore under the 13th Finance Commission. But when the Narendra Modi-led BJP government came to power, the State got ₹2,11,510 crore as per the 14th Finance Commission recommendations, he said.

While the National Democratic Alliance government has transferred development funds to the tune of total ₹5,13,000 crore — including ₹1,37,816 crore in the petroleum sector — to Odisha, the money had not reached villages, he said.

Making a veiled attack on the Odia-speaking ability of Mr. Patnaik, Mr. Shah said the next Chief Minister of Odisha should be an Odia-speaking leader.

“Odias gave the Congress the opportunity to rule for long time, but the State did not develop. Mr. Patnaik was given 19 years, but again there was no development. Narendra Modi should get the opportunity over next five years; a new beginning would surely usher in,” he stated.

As part of Mo Booth Sabuthu Mazboot (My Booth is the Strongest) programme, the BJP chief addressed about 30,000 booth-level committee members from 6,350 booths in the four Lok Sabha constituencies of Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur, which forms the coastal region of Odisha.

The BJP did not win a single parliamentary or Assembly seat in the region in the 2014 elections.
