Manisana Heisnam (57), the vice president of the Manipur People's Party (MPP), was killed on Wednesday at Changangei Ukhecon near the Imphal airport when he was proceeding to his office.
Some unidentified persons suspected to be insurgents intercepted Mr. Heisnam’s car and shot him with automatic guns. The assailants who had come in a car had overtaken him and blocked his car. Two of the persons opened fire from close range.
MPP sources told The Hindu that sometime back some persons had tried to assault him inside the party office. Following a complaint to the police armed police guards were posted in the MPP office. However he was denied armed security guards. The sources said that his son, who was an insurgent, was one of the seven insurgents who had been intercepted along the Manipur Myanmar border and killed by another extremist outfit.
Police suspect that some insurgents might have killed for betraying them. Before becoming the vice president of the MPP Mr. Heisnam was elected to the local council from Thanga in Bishnupur district.
