M.P. Minister draws ire for “threatening” IPS officer's relatives

March 13, 2012 02:26 am | Updated November 16, 2021 11:27 pm IST - BHOPAL:

Amid growing national outrage over the alleged murder of IPS officer Narendra Kumar by the mining mafia, the ruling BJP government has delivered a “shocker” to the officer's grieving wife and father.

Industries Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya's reaction to the charges levelled by Keshav Dev and Madhurani Tewatia — the officer's father and wife respectively — has been termed “shocking” and “insensitive” by many.

‘Stop allegations'

“Look the government is following procedures, a judicial probe has been ordered. They should stop levelling allegations against the government, otherwise we will have to show that the government is not weak,” Mr. Vijayvargiya told reporters after a Holi function in Indore on Sunday.

Sarkaar pe aarop lagana band karein, varna sarkar ne bhi choodiyaan nahi pehen rakhi ,” were the Minister's exact words which lose much of their “strength” when translated to English.

“His wife should concentrate on her health. This is not the time for her to demand an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation. A judicial probe has been ordered and it will bring out the truth about whether it was an accident or a murder,” Mr. Vijayvargiya further said.

‘Comments insensitive'

The Opposition Congress has termed the Minister's comments “shocking, insensitive and reeking of arrogance.”

“Mr. Vijayvargiya should respect the limits of the constitutional post he holds and should stop threatening the grieving relatives of the brave officer like an underworld don,” Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee president Kantilal Bhuria told reporters on Monday.

“The Minister's threat has come in the name of the government. This is serious. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan should either come out in support of the Minister and tell us all what more the government intends to do to hurt the officer's grieving relatives or condemn the statement,” said Mr. Bhuria.
