Madhya Pradesh has given tax exemption to Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain , a film on the gas tragedy that hit the capital city of the State three decades ago, killing over 5,000.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made this announcement after watching a special preview of the film here on Wednesday evening on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of one of the world’s worst industrial disasters. The movie is being released nation wide on Friday.

Praising the film for dealing with the subject in a “very sensitive” manner, Mr. Chouhan expressed the hope that such a tragedy would not recur anywhere in the world.

The tragedy occurred when gas from a fertilizer factory run by Union Carbide leaked into the air on the intervening night of December 2 and 3 in 1984.

The movie, directed by British based filmmaker Ravi Kumar, is a narration of the story leading up to the disaster from the perspective of a resident of a slum near the factory played by Rajpal Yadav.

The cast includes Martin Sheen, Mishea Barton, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and Manoj Joshi.
