The bodies of the mother and the infant daughter of a journalist were found on the outskirts of Nagpur city on Sunday, with the police suspecting murder.

Ravikant Kamble, a journalist working for a web portal in Nagpur, had informed the Nagpur police on Saturday night that his mother Usha Kamble, 52, and 18-month-old daughter Rashi were missing since evening from Pawanputra Nagar area of Nagpur.

“My mother left home at 5.30 pm yesterday. When we tried to contact her after an hour, her phone was switched off,” Mr. Kamble told The Hindu .

The bodies were found under a bridge on a stream near Bahadura area. Mr. Kamble, a well-known crime reporter in Nagpur, said that the assassin had slit the throats of the victims.

Pre-planned attack

“It does not appear to be a case of an attempted theft gone wrong or abduction for extortion. The gold ornaments of my mother and my daughter were found intact with their dead bodies. It appears to be a pre-planned murder after the abduction,” Mr.Kamble added.

Meanwhile, the Nagpur city police claimed to have cracked the case by evening.

A press statement, issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), informed that 26-year-old Ganesh Sahu had been arrested for the murders.

“The accused had a big quarrel with Usha Kamble on Saturday evening over some monetary transactions which is why he killed her along with her granddaughter,” the police press note claimed.

The Nagpur Union of Working Journalists condemned the brutal killings and demanded that the mystery behind the case be unravelled as soon as possible.
