Moral policing mars Valentine's Day

Activists of the right-wing Hindu organisations like the Bajrang Dal and the Shiv Sena on Saturday tried to disrupt Valentine's Day

celebrations at several cities, particularly the State capital, Kanpur and Bareilly, and targeted young couple at shopping malls and parks.

The police, which were on high alert, arrested several people for disturbing law and order situation.

According to reports, activists of Bajrang Dal, Hindu Mahasabha, Shiv Sena and Hindu Yuva Vahini moved in groups in Lucknow, Kanpur,

Meerut, Saharanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bulandshahr and Bareilly and confronted young couples moving around in parks and shopping malls. In

Kanpur, some couples were even bashed up by the “vigilantes”in the name of “'moral policing”.

Administration had made heavy police deployment at key locations in almost all major cities. The police also arrested several youths wearing saffron headbands and clothes who tried to disturb law and order in at least half a dozen cities. “Instructions were issued to police officials, especially in urban areas, to make necessary deployment of force to ensure that no one is allowed to take law in his hands,” IG (Law and Order) A. Satish Ganesh said.
