A 52-year-old ward boy of a district hospital in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, died on Sunday a day after receiving COVID-19 vaccine.

On Monday, officials said he died of a cardiopulmonary disease.

Mahipal Singh was given the first dose of Covishield at 1 p.m. on January 16, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Moradabad, M.C Garg, said.

On Sunday, he complained of chest pain and breathlessness and when he was taken to the hospital, he was declared brought dead, the CMO stated.

“As per the guidelines, after the vaccination, he was kept in an observation room for 30 minutes, during which time he did not face any complaints,” he said in a statement.

On January 16, 91 persons were given Covishield in the district men’s hospital Moradabad and all of them were fully healthy, he added.

Mahipal Singh’s son Vishal told reporters that he believed his father died due to the side effects of the vaccine. After the vaccination, he took his father home around 1.30 p.m. “He already had a bit of pneumonia, cough and cold, but after returning home [following the shot], he started feeling worse. We got him some warm water and tea and made him lie on the bed,” Mr. Vishal said.

The CMO said late on Saturday that the death “doesn’t appear to be a reaction” of the vaccine. Mahipal had also done night duty and did not face any problem.

On Sunday, the government released a report based on the autopsy. It said Mahipal died of cardiogenic and septicaemic shock due to a cardiopulmonary disease.

A panel of three doctors found that his heart weighed 500 gm as against the normal range of 200 gm. The chambers and aorta of the organ were found with blood clots. They also found pus pockets in the lungs.

The lungs, heart and blood were secured for further examination, said the CMO in his report.
