Modi to resign from Gujarat Chief Minister post on Wednesday

Gujarat Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel will be the new Chief Minister of the State. The announcement will be made at a meeting of BJP MLAs in Gandhinagar on Wednesday after Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi resigns from the post.

BJP sources told The Hindu that Ms. Patel, 73, a close aide of Mr. Modi, was the most likely choice, as she had been the second in command of Mr. Modi and had a long stint in State politics. Though Finance Minister Nitin Patel and Mr. Modi’s confidant Amit Shah are also in the race, Ms. Patel is the clear front runner.

“It is a natural course for her. She is number two in government and a senior Minister,” a BJP office-bearer said.

Ms. Patel’s clout became evident when Mr. Modi made her chair four-member ministerial group formed to run the show in Gujarat in his absence.

Asked about her likely elevation, she told The Hindu earlier, “It is up to the party to decide. I have been working in the party for 30 years.”

Modi to resign

After chairing a special farewell session of the Assembly on Wednesday morning, Mr. Modi will submit his resignation to Governor Kamala Beniwal at 3.30 p.m. He will attend the BJP legislature party meeting in the Gandhinagar Town Hall at 4 p.m. Later in the evening, he will submit his resignation as MLA from Maninagar to Speaker Vajubhai Vala, BJP spokesperson Harshad Patel said.

The BJP parliamentary board has appointed Om Mathur and Thavarchand Ghelot observers for the election of the new Chief Minister.

Holding M.Sc. and M.Ed. degrees, Ms. Patel worked as a teacher for three decades before making a foray into politics. Leading an active public life, she joined the BJP in 1987. Her husband, Mafatbhai Patel, was already a party member.

Ms. Patel rose up the ranks fast. She served as chairperson of the Gujarat Pradesh BJP women’s wing for seven years. She was nominated a Rajya Sabha member in 1994. Since 1998, when her MP term ended, she has been serving as an MLA and Minister in the governments of Keshubhai Patel and Mr. Modi.

“As a woman leader, Ms. Patel has carved a niche for herself in State politics. She has handled several departments well. She has a lot of experience and is hardworking,” a BJP leader who did not wish to be named said.
